How to Care for a New Tattoo: Healing and Aftercare Guide
Proper tattoo aftercare helps protect your new artwork while your skin heals. Whether you received a fine-line tattoo, black-and-grey realism, color realism, blackwork, or a large-scale piece, following your artist’s instructions is an important part of the tattoo experience.
Follow your artist’s bandage instructions
Your artist may use a protective film or a standard bandage. Keep it on for the recommended amount of time, and do not remove it early unless your artist tells you to. If you have a film bandage, showering may be fine, but soaking in a bath, pool, ocean, or hot tub should be avoided while the tattoo is healing.
Wash the tattoo gently
Always wash your hands before touching a fresh tattoo. After removing the bandage as directed, gently clean the area with mild, unscented soap and lukewarm water. Do not scrub the tattoo. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel and allow it to air dry before applying a very thin layer of the recommended aftercare product.
Keep the area moisturized—but do not overdo it
A fresh tattoo needs balanced moisture. Apply only a thin layer of aftercare ointment or fragrance-free lotion as recommended by your artist. Too much product can trap moisture and irritate the skin. As the tattoo heals, dryness and itching can be normal, but picking or scratching can damage the result.
Avoid swimming, sun, and friction
Avoid pools, oceans, hot tubs, and other soaking activities while the tattoo heals. Protect the area from direct sun, and avoid tight clothing or activities that create excessive rubbing. Once healed, regular SPF can help preserve the appearance of the tattoo.
What healing symptoms are normal?
Mild redness, tenderness, peeling, and itching can occur during healing. Full healing often takes several weeks, depending on the tattoo and your skin. Do not pick at flakes or scabs, and contact a healthcare professional if you experience unusual drainage, excessive bleeding, severe pain, or significant swelling, redness, or heat.
